The annual global production of primary aluminum has increased from 25 million tonne in 2000 to 45 million tonne in 2012, an average growth rate of 5.2% per year. Over the same period China's annual aluminum production grew from 3 million tonne to 20 million tonne, an average growth rate of 18% per year.
